A Summer Prayer

Alyssa Jordan

I lie awake and dream

of a life without you.

No more cuts for you

to pry apart, fingers

slick with salt and spit

that flies past your lips.

What would life be

if I’d chosen softer,

I hope

for a ripening,

a give in your skin.
