Curable Romantic

Amrita V. Nair

Life of the party,
Light of every room you walk into:
You’re so used to people
Writing poems about you,
It wouldn’t even register
That I spent an entire week
Locked in my room,
Searching for the right word
to describe your blue
(And held myself back
Five different times
From politely wondering
If you’d like to talk about your tattoos).

I’d hate it if this made you feel special.
It’s not like you need the boost.
You’re already so vain
You probably think all this is about you.

So, I find that it is on me
To tell you very clearly:

You could have been anyone, really.

When people are drowning
They’re not very discerning
About the quality of driftwood
They hold on to.
