My dog wakes me not
by pawing at the bed
or barking, but by
standing and staring
at me, a fur-covered
ghost. We go outside,
dawn still hours away,
the neighborhood still
asleep. I like these
early morning walks,
everyone slumbering
except us, everyone still
believing the day could
bring anything.
